Celebrating Yorkshire Day: The Makers, the Stories and the Spirit Behind Little Bird Made
Every year on 1 August, Yorkshire Day gives us the chance to celebrate everything that makes God's Own County so special. From rolling moorland and historic market towns to world-class food, creativity and craftsmanship, Yorkshire is a place full of character, resilience and community.
At Little Bird Made, Yorkshire isn't just where we're based—it's at the very heart of who we are.
Since the very beginning, our mission has been simple: to champion talented independent makers and create beautiful events where small businesses can thrive. Yorkshire has always been home to an extraordinary community of artisans, designers, artists, bakers, jewellers, ceramicists and craftspeople, each with their own unique story to tell.
One of the greatest privileges of organising our artisan markets is meeting the incredible people behind the businesses. Every product on a Little Bird stall has been created with passion, skill and dedication. Behind every candle, illustration, piece of jewellery or handcrafted gift is someone who has poured their heart into what they do.
That is something worth celebrating every day—but especially on Yorkshire Day.
Yorkshire has a proud heritage of making things properly. It's a county built on craftsmanship, creativity and hard work, and those values continue to shine through in the independent businesses we work with. Whether it's a family recipe that's been handed down through generations, a beautifully turned wooden bowl, contemporary ceramics inspired by the Yorkshire landscape or luxury skincare made using locally sourced ingredients, our traders represent the very best of Yorkshire talent.
Many of our makers design and produce everything by hand in studios, workshops and around kitchen tables across the county. They aren't mass-producing products; they're creating pieces with care, attention and personality. When you shop with them, you're not simply buying an item—you're supporting a dream, a family business and the future of independent creativity.
We're incredibly proud that so many Yorkshire businesses have grown alongside Little Bird Made over the years. We've watched traders launch new collections, open their first shops, win awards and build loyal customer followings after exhibiting at our markets. Seeing those journeys unfold is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Our events have always been about more than shopping. They're about bringing communities together, encouraging people to discover local talent and creating memorable days out in some of Yorkshire's most beautiful locations. Whether it's the grandeur of Fountains Abbey, the historic setting of Knaresborough Castle, the magnificent Harewood House, or one of Yorkshire's bustling market towns, each venue reflects the unique character that makes this county so special.
This Yorkshire Day weekend, we're especially excited to be celebrating at Knaresborough Castle, where our Yorkshire Day Artisan Market will take place on Friday 31 July and Saturday 1 August, from 10am to 3pm each day. It's the perfect opportunity to discover talented Yorkshire makers, enjoy the wonderful atmosphere of one of the county's most picturesque towns and shop directly from independent businesses offering everything from handcrafted homeware and jewellery to artisan food, gifts and treats.
As we celebrate Yorkshire Day, we'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to every maker, artist, producer and creative business that has been part of the Little Bird family. Your passion, talent and determination inspire us every day, and we're honoured to play a small part in helping your businesses flourish.
And to everyone who visits our markets—thank you for choosing to shop small, support local and appreciate the craftsmanship behind every purchase. Your support makes an enormous difference to hundreds of independent businesses across Yorkshire.
If you're looking for the perfect way to celebrate Yorkshire Day, we'd love to welcome you to Knaresborough Castle this Friday and Saturday between 10am and 3pm. Come and meet the makers, discover something truly special and celebrate everything that's wonderful about Yorkshire.
Happy Yorkshire Day from all of us at Little Bird Made.
