The BIG Move
The BIG Move
One of the most rewarding things about supporting local markets is watching small businesses grow.
At Little Bird Artisan Markets, I’ve seen traders begin with a kitchen table, a spare room stacked with boxes, or a shed at the bottom of the garden packed with stock and ideas. What often starts as a hobby, a side hustle or a creative outlet slowly becomes something much bigger.
You can see the moment it changes. Confidence grows. Customers return. Orders increase. Suddenly, the dining room is no longer a dining room and every spare corner of the house is filled with packaging, products and plans.
Then comes the next big step — storage, workspace, perhaps even premises of their own.
It is exciting, but also daunting. Moving from working at home to taking on outside space is often the moment a business owner realises: this is real now. There are new costs, bigger risks and greater responsibility. Rent, utilities, insurance and staffing all become part of the conversation.
For many small businesses, this stage can feel just as frightening as starting in the first place. But it is also a sign of success. It shows that what they have built is working.
Behind every market stall is usually someone taking enormous personal risks, investing huge amounts of time and often juggling family life, other jobs and financial pressures just to keep going. We should never underestimate the courage it takes to grow something from a kitchen table into a sustainable business.
That is why local markets matter so much. They are more than places to shop — they are launchpads for entrepreneurs, creative people and independent businesses finding their feet.
Some of today’s most successful local businesses started with a gazebo, a folding table and someone willing to give it a go.
